Colonel Sam Tate: The Man Behind Much of Modern Tate
Who Was Colonel Sam Tate?
Colonel Samuel “Sam” Tate was one of the most influential figures in the history of Tate, Georgia. As president and general manager of the Georgia Marble Company beginning in 1905, he helped transform the marble industry into the economic heart of the community while also investing deeply in the people who lived there.
Tate’s influence reached far beyond the quarries. He helped shape the town itself, supporting the development of housing, churches, community facilities, and schools. He was especially committed to education and believed strongly in creating opportunities for local children.
A Strong Supporter of Education
Sam Tate helped fund and support schools for both white and African American students during a time when Georgia’s public education system was deeply segregated. He hired qualified teachers, provided housing for educators, helped pay salaries, and supported school programs and activities.
He also encouraged students to continue their education beyond high school and helped some Tate graduates attend college.
Tate viewed schools as more than places for classroom instruction. They were also community gathering places. School events, performances, music programs, and even movies became part of community life in Tate.
Building a Lasting Legacy
After an earlier school building was destroyed by fire in 1927, a new school was constructed using locally quarried Georgia marble. The building that became Tate High School — and later Tate Elementary School — remains one of the community’s most recognizable landmarks.
The school’s distinctive marble construction reflects the close connection between education, the Georgia Marble Company, and the history of Tate itself.
Today, generations of students have passed through the doors of Tate School, making it one of the most visible reminders of Sam Tate’s commitment to the community.
More Than Marble
While Sam Tate is best known for leading the Georgia Marble Company, his legacy can also be seen in the community he helped build.
His support of education, local families, churches, civic life, and community development helped shape Tate for generations.
As Tate School celebrates its centennial, the story of Sam Tate remains an important part of understanding how the school — and the community surrounding it — came to be.
